Obsessed: Freaks and Geeks

I found another TV show marathon over the Christmas weekend that totally sucked me in: Freaks and Geeks. This show ran for one year, 18 episodes from 1999-2000. It is set in the 1980s and follows siblings Lindsay and Sam through normal high school trials and tribulations. Lindsay is a former mathlete who has befriended a group pf "freaks" and Sam, younger, is clearly a "geek." I watched this show back when it originally aired and nowadays when people discuss TV shows that they miss, I always chime in with "Freaks and Geeks." When watching the reruns, I realized many awesome things. First, the executive producer was Judd Apatow. Second, while I remember the actress who played the Lindsay character clearly, I did not remember that James Franco, Jason Segal, Busy Phillips and Seth Rogan are all "freaks" as well. Additionally, there are appearances by the actor who played Biff in the Back To The Future movies, Rashida Jones and Ben Stiller. What a pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed watching all of the reruns, it really does show what high school was like for the rest of us :)

Obsessed: Criminal Minds

Over the Christmas holiday I discovered a TV show that I am now completely obsessed with: Criminal Minds. My friend Kelly Spalding had been telling me that she thought I would like the show, so I checked out a marathon of episodes. Now I watch every episode I can find, as the show has been on for five years now and I have a lot to catch up on :) If you like cop dramas, I recommend you check it out!

Tuesday Shoesday Part 1: Christmas Shoes

No, not those Christmas shoes. I am sharing what I received last week! The first were ourchased via a Target gift card. As you may know, I've been on the hunt for slippers. I found these boys' slippers and loved how warm and snug they were, but also had a sturdy sole for dog walking at night.

And these were a gift from my mom. I am so excited to have versatile black rain boots - we get a fair amount of rain in the DC area and I just love Kamik boots!

Tuesday Shoesday: Etsy Finds

My friend Amber Gustafson linked on Twitter today to some beautiful shoes that she borrowed from a friend who got them from Etsy, and it got me thinking that I needed to explore Etsy for shoes. Usually my go-to is Zappos, in case you had not noticed. But I was thrilled with the unique finds on Etsy!

I found these on the front page of women's shoes. I love them!


These are pretty spooky and have a very strong point of view, but I think the artist seems really talented! And they would be great for Halloween!


And I can't leave you today without a pair of slippers, since I am still in need of a new pair for this winter. Plus I just adore the dog in the photo!

Shopping: Give Good Stuff

As promised, today I am revealing my favorite places to shop for amazing gifts. I hope this small collection of ideas helps you out this holiday season.

As you know, I love food! And I absolutely love Zingermans. I have forgotten where I first learned about this delicious deli located in Ann Arbor. Their breads are a staple for me for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Chocolate Cherry Sourdough and the Cranberry Pecan Bread are required eating for me.

For the longest time I only bought my younger siblings clothes (I felt they had enough toys!) for birthdays and Christmas. It got to the point where when they saw my name on the "From:" line, they wouldn't even open the package - they'd just mumble "clothes" and toss the box aside. Now they wear uniforms to school and I have been asked not to buy them any more clothes :) If you are lucky enough to get to shop for kids clothes, I recommend Mini Boden. This Canadian company sells positively adorable clothes and accessories for babies, girls and boys.

And my ultimate secret weapon, the catalog/website that has gotten me more oohs and aahs at showers and parties is (drum roll) Uncommon Goods. This website has unique and green gifts for everyone that you could possibly shop for. Take a peek, trust me you will find something to purchase - if not for someone else, then definitely for yourself.

Shopping: Do Good

Every Christmas I try to spend some money on "doing good" in addition to the consumption of "stuff." I have honed my favorites over the year and am bursting to share them with you.

First, as I've blogged before, I love Donors Choose. Through this organization you can look through thousands of publoc school classroom requests and contribute as much as you'd like to one or more. You can also buy a "gift card" and give it to someone else to allocate to a project. I am giving these to my 11 and 13 year old siblings this year. I can't wait to hear what they decide to do with them.

Second, Heifer International. I LOVE this organization. They provide (mostly) animals to people in developing areas to help them not only sustain themselves through food but also generate income. You can "buy" honey bees, rabbits, geese, ducks, chickens, goats, pigs, sheep, cows and even water buffalo. What is even cooler is that you can go to the Heifer Farm in the US in the spring and help with the birthing of the lambs! How cool does that sound?

Kiva is another organization dedicated to helping people help themselves. You can give a loan to someone who is a blooming entrepreneur and be paid back within six months. Kiva believes that the partnership relationship encourages respect and dignity, as well as accountability, and that is why they promote loans and not donations.

The Wounded Warrior Project is an organization that I learned about from my clients who made donations in honor of their wedding guests, in lieu of favors. In a time where many return from war, but return wounded, this organization has a critical mission: to honor and empower this generation's wounded warriors.

As you probably know, I am a huge advocate of homeless animals. So it is hard for me to select just one animal rescue to donate to. The larger ones (Humane Society, SPCA) already have huge benefactors. So I will point out that two I have worked with locally, and adopted my dogs from: Internet Miniature Pinscher Service and Lost Dog and Cat Rescue.
