Obsessed: My dogs: Tammy

Here is our second rescue, Tammy, as photographed by Melissa McDaniel. She just turned 5 years old two days ago and we got her in November 2007. She is a 9 pound, long haired, black & rust dachshund.

Tuesday Shoesday: Mea Shadow 'Galatea' Flat

How cute is this ruffly flat? I saw it at Nordstrom last week when shopping with a friend. I might have to go back for it!

This is the band playing at my birthday party in about 2 weeks. You should be pumped if you are coming, and jealous if not :)

Obsessed: Black Bird

I have always been a Beatles fan. I'm also a fan of Elvis, so that proves my musical schizophrenia right there. I had the pleasure of seeing Paul McCartney at FedEx Field in August of 2009 and it was an amazing show. I would certainly pay that kind of money to see him again. One of the most memorable parts of the concert for me (in addition than the pyro nearly making me wet myself during Live and Let Die) was his solo, acoustic performance of Blackbird. This was not a particularly notable song to me before the show, but when Paul explained how he wrote it after watching the desegregation of the schools in the south on TV, I was incredibly moved. Enjoy!

Tuesday Shoesday: Carolyn's Real Wedding Shoes

Today is my birthday and I forgot about Tuesday Shoesday. Luckily I had these beautiful pictures in my back pocket. This was my October 2 bride. Isn't she stunning? I am so loving the shoe shots from Andrew Reilly.

I love this picture. It is so colorful, fun and relaxed. Great job Andrew!

Charity: Donors Choose

I just love this organization. Actual school teachers from across the country can apply for grants and you get to pick which ones you want to donate to. I've seen teachers asking for money for drumsticks so that they can start an after school rhythm class. I've seen teachers at an elementary school asking for a TV/VCR because they share one TV/VCR with the middle school across the street. Art, science, music, math - you can support your favorite class, a local school - the options are seemingly endless. Which might seem depressing. But in reality it is a grassroots movement to improve our public schools. So don't wait - get involved! Now!

Obsessed: "Waiting for 'Superman'"

Over the weekend I saw this movie, which is currently in limited release, and has a companion book you can get at any bookstore (yes, I already have mine). And now I am totally obsessed. Written and directed by Davis Guggenheim (Oscar winning director of "An Inconvenient Truth"), this movie focuses on the current state of our public school system. Now before you tune me out because you have heard this before and don't know what you can to to help, please stick around for a few more minutes.

The film covers the terrible statistics and test scores, the dreadful "rubber room" in NY and the "lemon dance" (where tenured but terrible teachers are shuffled around their district each year), the tensions between reformers and union leaders and most importantly, it follows 5 students who are entering lotteries to get into a charter school where they have a better chance of graduating and going on to college. Yes, there are awesome, amazing, successful public schools out there that have 90+% graduation rates. Unfortunately there are limited spaces at these schools and the only fair way to let in new students is a lottery. And the term lottery was never so appropriate. The final minutes of this movie, showing you the results of the different lotteries, is positively gut wrenching.

The companion book, which I've started but haven't finished, adds a lot to the movie. So far I've gotten to hear more from people who were featured in the 2 hour film. And I am in awe with the information and ideas overflowing from the pages.

In summary, please go see the movie, read the book, and donate to DonorsChoose.org.

Tuesday Shoesday: From this year's weddings

I am copping out this week and posting some pictures of my clients' shoes from this year. But I hope you enjoy it anyway!

OK confession. I am not sure if these are Erwin's or Ed's shoes. Photo via Three Lights Photography.

Obsessed: Boogie Shoes

So, after my friend got me to watch one SYTYCD video, he then showed me this one, knowing my love for KC and the Sunshine Band and Chuck Taylors. It's not as good as "Outta Your Mind" but it is still very fun.

Obsessed: Outta Your Mind

I don't watch So You Think You Can Dance. But my friend showed me this video and it is amazing. You have to watch it.

Tuesday Shoesday: 3 Converse All Stars!

And it's October. Which is my birthday month. So as I start to look around for things I might want to add to my birthday wish list, I have to check out the Converse website. While I may end up with a custom design, these three options are also giving me pause. Which ones should I ask for?
