Obsessed: Dreams of Flying by Jan Von Holleben

Here is another photographer, Jan Von Holleben, who has an awesome, ongoing collection of super creative photos called Dreams of Flying. These feature children positioned to appear to be doing something that they are not. I love it. So simple and so divine. You should check out the collection!

Obsessed: Justin Oliver

I really like Justin Oliver. I also really like the record label he is on. I think this is a fun video, and a good rendition of a great tune from his album For Rose. I hope you like it. Obsessed: Freaks and Geeks

I found another TV show marathon over the Christmas weekend that totally sucked me in: Freaks and Geeks. This show ran for one year, 18 episodes from 1999-2000. It is set in the 1980s and follows siblings Lindsay and Sam through normal high school trials and tribulations. Lindsay is a former mathlete who has befriended a group pf "freaks" and Sam, younger, is clearly a "geek." I watched this show back when it originally aired and nowadays when people discuss TV shows that they miss, I always chime in with "Freaks and Geeks." When watching the reruns, I realized many awesome things. First, the executive producer was Judd Apatow. Second, while I remember the actress who played the Lindsay character clearly, I did not remember that James Franco, Jason Segal, Busy Phillips and Seth Rogan are all "freaks" as well. Additionally, there are appearances by the actor who played Biff in the Back To The Future movies, Rashida Jones and Ben Stiller. What a pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed watching all of the reruns, it really does show what high school was like for the rest of us :)

Obsessed: Criminal Minds

Over the Christmas holiday I discovered a TV show that I am now completely obsessed with: Criminal Minds. My friend Kelly Spalding had been telling me that she thought I would like the show, so I checked out a marathon of episodes. Now I watch every episode I can find, as the show has been on for five years now and I have a lot to catch up on :) If you like cop dramas, I recommend you check it out!

Obsessed: Dog Adoption

There are few things I am more passionate about than dog adoption. There are so many myths out there about homeless dogs, it makes my stomach turn. In actuality, most dogs in shelters and rescues have simply been evicted from their home. These evictions come for many reasons - a change in jobs, a move/foreclosure/eviction, a divorce, addition of babies, teens no longer interested in the dog, addition of other pets or a lack of dedication to exercising/training the dog.


First is the myth that shelter dogs are all aggressive. Shelters and rescues actually have a responsibility to weed out the aggressive dogs due to insurance requirements. My rescue turns away dogs that have drawn blood. I have been bit by a dog and I don't wish it on anyone. So most dogs in rescues and shelters have been put through temperament tests. That said, every new dog brought into your home should be taken to obedience classes so that you and your dog can communicate with each other.

The second myth I hear is that most shelter dogs have medical issues. This could not be further from the truth. Yes, you will find some dogs, such as my foster Prince, with major medical issues, but it is widely accepted that mutts are much healthier than pure bred dogs. Most breeders are not good breeders. Most "breeders" are in fact puppy mills and they are only in it for the money and therefore skimp on basic vet care. This holds especially true for puppies found in pet stores.

Finally, I have heard people complain that they are looking for a very specific kind of dog. I don't blame you; I wanted a very specific dog myself - and I was able to find her in rescue. Petfinder has over 350,000 pets available for adoption. There is something for everyone on there. For example, a quick search turned up 170 french bulldogs or french bulldog mixes across the country. There are 150+ Boxer or Boxer mixes within 100 miles of Virginia. I found over 350 Labrador Retrievers or Lab mixes within 100 miles of Denver, Colorado. There are almost 600 chihuahuas in need of a home within 100 miles of New Jersey. And over 200 Golden Retriever or Golden Retriever mixes are looking for a new home in New England. If you are looking for a specific breed, you can almost certainly find a rescue specific to that breed in your area and your perfect dog is likely to come up in their ranks sooner rather than later.

So please consider adoption when looking for a new pet. Over 6 millions pets are euthanized each year because shelters simply don't have the space to keep them all. This is a tragedy, and it is preventable. Also, please spay or neuter every pet. And thanks for reading.

Much to my husband's chagrin, I love wearing tee shirts. I have a lot of tee shirts. So many that I had a tee shirt quilt made with about 30 of my favorite shirts. Threadless is one of my favorite places to shop for new tees. Here are some of my current favorites:

Here is our second rescue, Tammy, as photographed by Melissa McDaniel. She just turned 5 years old two days ago and we got her in November 2007. She is a 9 pound, long haired, black & rust dachshund.

I had professional photos of my dogs taken by Melissa McDaniel and I think it's time to blog about them. They are so great! This is Nikki. She is an 11 year old, 12 pound black & tan miniature pinscher. She was out first rescue, we got her in September 2005.

So, after my friend got me to watch one SYTYCD video, he then showed me this one, knowing my love for KC and the Sunshine Band and Chuck Taylors. It's not as good as "Outta Your Mind" but it is still very fun.

Obsessed: Comedian Daniel Tosh

There is a show on Comedy Central called Tosh.0. And it is brilliant. Daniel Tosh, stand up comedian, shows clips of videos from the internet and makes fun of them. And it makes me LOL for thirty minutes straight. I recommend you check it out. Some of it is gross, but now you've been warned.

I love Aziz Ansari. He does a great job on Parks & Rec on NBC with Amy Poehler. He is doing stand up in DC in November and I hope to catch the show.
